Users who download and install these fake apps unknowingly provide their UPI credentials to the fraudsters.
- Phishing Websites: Fraudsters create fake websites that closely resemble the official websites of UPI payment providers. They send phishing emails or messages with links to these fake websites, tricking users into entering their UPI credentials or personal information. The information entered on these websites is then captured by the fraudsters.
- Impersonation Calls: Fraudsters may impersonate bank officials or customer support representatives and call individuals, claiming there is a problem with their UPI account. They trick users into revealing their UPI credentials or personal information over the phone.
Preventive Measures to Avoid UPI Phishing Fraud:
- Install Official Apps: Only download UPI apps from official sources such as Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Avoid downloading apps from unfamiliar or unofficial sources.
- Verify App Developers: Before installing a UPI app, verify the developer’s name and ensure it matches the official app developer. Check for user reviews and ratings to identify any suspicious activity associated with the app.
- Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Enable two-factor authentication for your UPI account. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a unique OTP (One-Time Password) or fingerprint, in addition to your UPI credentials.
- Be Cautious of Emails and Messages: Be cautious of emails or messages that request your UPI credentials or personal information. Legitimate banks or UPI service providers typically do not ask for such information through email or messages. Avoid clicking on links in suspicious emails or messages.
- Verify Caller Identity: If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a bank official or customer support representative, be cautious. Do not provide any sensitive information over the phone. Instead, hang up and independently verify the caller’s identity by contacting the official customer support number of your bank or UPI provider.
- Educate Yourself: Stay informed about UPI phishing fraud and the latest fraud techniques. Regularly update yourself on security practices and awareness campaigns initiated by banks and UPI providers to combat phishing and fraud.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter any suspicious activity or believe you have been a victim of UPI phishing fraud, immediately report it to your bank and the local authorities. They can take necessary actions to investigate and prevent further fraud.
